The next month there was an awards ceremony. I was given a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with a “V” device. Who recommended me for this and why, I have never found out.

There were still a couple of hours of daylight after we made it back to the firebase. They called in an air strike to destroy the bunkers.

It was time to get ready for the night. We had been there five days with sniper attacks, ground attacks with rocket and mortar attacks every night so we expected this night to be more of the same. Orders were to have a “mad minute” at 0200 that night. A mad minute is when everyone gets up and fires their weapon, straight out in all directions for 60 seconds. This keeps the enemy off guard and might possibly hit any of the NVA who are setting up for an attack.
